The above picture was taken at “Mary, Queen of Peace” cemetery in Erie, PA, where our former  proofreader Ginny Spaeder is buried.  According to the “Handbook of Indulgences,” one can receive a plenary indulgence from November 1-8 by, devoutly visiting a cemetery and praying for the dead (indulgence applicable only to the souls in Purgatory).

If you would like a pdf of the paper copy we mail out so that you can print it to share with others, email June at jklins1981@verizon.net and put "November pdf"  in the subject line.

Medjugorje

A short time ago, I was preaching a mission in a state correctional institution of Pennsylvania. I was surprised at the interest so many of the men have in Medjugorje.

For some of them, it was an awakening to Mary’s role in the plan of redemption. Time and again, in question periods, the subject of Medjugorje would be raised. “Were you ever there?”  “Did you see anything miraculous?”

It called me back to my first visit. I saw a number of incidents that I regarded as miraculous, but the real miracle was the quality of the confessions. They had no confessionals, but each priest who was hearing confessions would have two milking stools held together by rope. Then the penitents would come. Some people who came as tourists came for their first confessions. Some priests or religious who seemed burnt- out, moved easily to a new consecration.

   And I was glad.

And I knew this was of God.

And I knew, even though they weren’t there [in Medjugorje], the inmates realized it was truly of God.

   News from Medjugorje

By Sister Emmanuel

As the summer winds down to an end, we thank the Lord for the abundance of graces we received! Of course, Vicka’s absence was sorely felt (she is still under painful therapy) as was Father Jozo’s, but the other visionaries rose to the challenge of filling in the spaces, offering their testimony almost every day, for the joy of the pilgrims!  They allowed us to concentrate on what matters the most: the Gospel, as told by a Mother to her children in Medjugorje.  In such places like Medjugorje, there is always the risk to focus on distractions, missing the grace of a deep conversion.  As Father Slavko used to say, “If, when you come to Medjugorje, all you see is the sun spinning, then your ticket was too expensive!”

Another grace of the summer came in the form of a visit to our home by inner locutionist, Jelena Vasilj-Valente.  One of the questions came from a young mother who happened to be with us:  “Jelena, how do you pray in the family everyday when you have four little children, your husband, and so much work?" (Jelena and Massimiliano have four young children under the age of six years.) Jelena answered, “Well, how could I possibly do it if we were not praying together?  Without prayer I wouldn’t survive!  It’s the prayer that keeps us together, it’s from prayer that I draw all my strength and my peace.”  Then another question came, “What if someone just cannot pray?”  Jelena answered, “While it’s difficult, it’s also very easy.  The simple fact that we pray is already a promise. Our Lady will lead you.  Maybe, you can join a prayer group.  If you are trying to pray, it means that Our Lady is already doing something in your heart, so don’t be discouraged!  A priest I admire once said, ‘The worst prayer is the prayer that is not said!’”

Sacred Scripture

Often I repeat to myself the message of St. Paul in the eighth chapter of his letter to the Romans. “For those who love God, things turn out for good.” God is with us and beside us, through everything. Life can be difficult, but we are not alone. Sometimes I just think (or mention to someone) “Romans:8” as it is a reminder of what the English mystic Julian of Norwich taught, ” All will be well.” So when your life involves difficulties, remember Romans:8, and all through the ups and downs of every day, have your favorite Scripture passages handy to encourage you.

My Personal Pilgrimage

By Susan Tassone

How did I get involved with the holy souls in Purgatory?

I want to share why I got involved and tell a little bit about how God is working in my life to help you understand what I experienced.

On August 11, 1983, the feast of my patron, St. Susanna, I was hit head on and injured by a cab, which left my left leg damaged. My doctor told me that my leg was permanently damaged, and that I would have constant bouts of painful swelling and tenderness of the leg for the rest of my life.

The date was even more significant. Fifty years earlier, on that very same day, my great aunt, known as “Little Mary,” who was ten years old at the time, was also injured in a car accident. She died. I survived. A priest told me that my life was spared and that I had a mission. He said that sometimes a sacrifice is made in the family for a greater cause. It shook me up.

I have had a special bond with the Blessed Mother since I was a child. My mother was very active in the parish, and we were very young when she planted the seed for the love of Our Lady in our hearts. (I remember, for example, we had the Pilgrim Virgin statue in our home.)

In 1993, with the permission of my doctor, I decided to go on a pilgrimage to Medjugorje, to pay a visit, experience closeness with Our Lady, and to return home. Our Blessed Mother had other plans. During an apparition on Good Friday night, 1993, I saw an image of Our Lady within a cobalt blue color. I knew it was Her.  They say the white flashes are angels that appear before Her. My knees shook. I “knelt” to steady them. I was in amazement and awe.

My rosary links turned to gold and my leg, my permanently damaged leg, was healed on Mt. Krizevac (Cross Mountain).  My doctor said it was a miracle and I was blessed.  However, he waited three years before he would document the healing. He wanted to be sure it was real. Three years later, I flew back to Medjugorje to deliver the letter. It is one of the documented medical cases of registered healings in Medjugorje.  Fr. Slavko Barbaric interviewed me for “Mir Magazine,” the local magazine of Medjugorje.

When I returned home, I realized OurLady had other surprises for me. Someone gave me a booklet called Read Me or Rue It. It was about the plight of the holy souls in Purgatory. I was fascinated with the stories about the holy souls and how they intercede for  those who relieve their sufferings. These souls were in desperate need of our Masses.

The booklet said the holy souls would repay you 10,000 times. I liked the idea. I needed all the friends I could get! It was like quid pro quo: You help me, and I will help you. I wanted all my family and friends to reach God. I identified with the holy souls. I don’t like being cooped up. I am a free spirit. I like my freedom. Why not help release them so they can reach Heaven? Free them!

I took it upon myself to become a missionary for our holy heroes. In my journey, I began to understand how critical the doctrine of Purgatory is to our faith, how Purgatory is a very positive and consoling part of that faith.

I began collecting Mass stipends for the holy souls in Purgatory. People of every faith gave donations. I soon realized that they were hungry for God. I collected $763 and brought the donation to my pastor. To my surprise, he was unable to accept the donation because he was the only priest in the parish and his Mass-intentions book was filled. For the first time, it personally struck home how we need to pray for vocations to the priesthood. The priest sent me to the Catholic Missions Office – or, as it’s officially called, the Propagation of the Faith. Every diocese has one. Its purpose is to support our missionary priests all over the world through our prayers and donations.

I visited the Missions Director and learned again how desperately our Catholic missionary priests needed Mass stipends. Many times those gifts are their sole income because the people of the countries where they serve are too poor to donate financially.

Since 1993, I have waged a crusade for the holy souls in Purgatory collecting Mass stipends – anything I could do for our missionaries and suffering friends in need. I tried to promote this through television, radio, Internet print media, public speaking, and writing. To date, more than two million dollars has been raised for Mass stipends for our missionary priests because of readers like you. I like to see it as two million souls released from Purgatory.

My journey has deepened my faith tremendously, allowing me to better see the goodness and mercy of God, and to join with my fellow supplicants in celebrating the beauty of our faith. My heartfelt thanks to Our Lady, my life, my sweetness, and all my hope.

Editor’s note: Susan lives in Chicago. She has authored a number of books about praying for the holy souls in Purgatory and inviting us to answer Our Lady call of over half dozen times in her early messages to pray for the holy souls giving them "the joy of the holy Mass..."  Visit www.spiritualtreasury.com for Masses, and Gregorian Masses.

Her newest book, released in September, is called Praying with the Saints for the Holy Souls in Purgatory.  I think it is Susan’s best yet. It covers everything you want to know about Purgatory, and the fact that the book has an Imprimatur assures that it does not deviate from Church teachings. Susan uses Scripture, the Catechism, quotes of the saints and the popes to support her writing. The stories of the saints are fascinating. I could hardly put it down. It hit the Catholic Best Sellers list in 15 days!

The back of Ginny's tombstone

“Be the Extended Hands of God”

By June Klins

Last month, we told you that our proofreader, Ginny Spaeder, was called home after a short but courageous battle with cancer. How appropriate that she would go on the 25th of the month - the day Our Lady gives Her message to the world.  Visionary Mirjana has said that dates are significant. Ginny’s funeral was Tuesday, the 29th, the feast day of Sts. Michael, Raphael and Gabriel. She probably had a devotion to St. Michael, since she named one of her sons Michael. I can just picture the archangels escorting her Home.

Ginny's funeral was beautiful. “What a send-off!” remarked one of her friends. She had four priests concelebrate the Mass, as well as a deacon to assist. The priest who gave the homily prayed the Hail Mary in his homily, and he said to think about how many times Ginny must have said that prayer over the period of her lifetime. He emphasized the "pray for us sinners, now and AT THE HOUR OF OUR DEATH.”  He felt that Our Lady would have honored that request, since Ginny was so active in promoting the Rosary. She was in charge of the rosary- makers for our diocese. Her basement was always filled with supplies for making rosaries. Ginny was active in the Rosary Society, the Legion of Mary, and led the Rosary before Mass every week.

Father said that if you can say that cancer has anything good about it, it gives you time to prepare yourself for eternal life - as opposed to having a heart attack and dying on the spot, with no time to prepare. Ginny had received the Last Sacraments three times.

Father said that he chose the Gospel reading for the funeral Mass from John: 6, the Bread of Life Discourse, because it was through the frequent reception of the Eucharist that Ginny received the strength to accept her cancer and imminent death.  Ginny had shared with me, in one of our last conversations, that she now understood why the patients in the nursing home would get so excited when she would bring them Communion. Since she was too weak to attend Mass, she would watch it on EWTN, and patiently wait for someone to bring her spiritual sustenance, the Bread of Life.

Father talked about how Ginny did not waste her time on earth. He said that his fellow priests would agree that it is hard sometimes when they do a funeral to come up with things that a person has done to make a difference, but for Ginny  it was easy.  She was always giving joyfully of herself to others.  Father said that she did not waste her time here and that if she could say anything to the congregation right now, that she would challenge them to do the same.

I, myself, think she would tell us to live the following message, given by Our Lady on February 25, 1997:  "Dear children! Today I invite you in a special way to open yourselves to God the Creator and to become active. I invite you, little children, to see at this time who needs your spiritual or material help. By your example, little children, you will be the extended hands of God, which humanity is seeking. Only in this way will you understand, that you are called to witness and to become joyful carriers of God’s word and of His love. Thank you for having responded to my call."

How appropriate that the cemetery where Ginny was buried is called, “Mary, Queen of Peace”  -  the same name Our Lady has asked to be called in Medjugorje. Ginny had made two pilgrimages to Medjugorje. “A Miracle for Alice from Medjugorje,” her testimony of one of her pilgrimages, was published in our November, 1995 issue. Ginny told me how thrilled she was when it was published in many other Medjugorje publications after that. She was even more excited when it was published in our first book, Volume I of The Best of “The Spirit of Medjugorje.”

A collection was taken for Gregorian Masses for Ginny, even though most of us think she had an “express ride” to Heaven. A very holy priest once told our Medjugorje prayer group to NEVER assume someone has gone straight to Heaven, that it is a great disservice to the person. If you have Masses said for them and they are already there, then they get what St. Thomas Aquinas has called “accidental glory,” which adds to their glory in Heaven. So there is nothing to lose.

When I said my last good-bye to Ginny at the funeral home, I asked her to continue to help us with the newsletter. I am sure her prayers will help Pat Berrier, who has agreed to be our new proofreader.

Rest in peace, dear Ginny, and ask Our Lady to watch over us as we continue to spread Her messages.

Handprint of soul in Purgatory in a museum in Rome

Gregorian Masses

Gregorian Masses are thirty Masses said at any altar for thirty consecutive days for the deliverance of a certain soul from Purgatory. The pious practice of having these Masses celebrated for the deliverance of the souls from Purgatory was not first introduced by Saint Gregory the Great, who was sovereign Pontiff from 590 to 604, but precedes his time. However, they are called Gregorian Masses because St. Gregory contributed to the spread of this pious practice. In his Dialogues, the saint tells us that he caused to be said thirty Masses on thirty consecutive days for the repose of the soul of Justus, a monk who had died in the convent of St. Andrew in Rome. At the end of the thirtieth Mass, the deceased appeared to his brother,Copusoos, who had assisted him as a physician in his last illness, and announced that he had been delivered from the flames of Purgatory.

In their “Lives of the Saints,” the Bollandists tell us that on the thirtieth day, Saint Gregory himself was assured of the deliverance of the soul of Justus. And an inscription in the church of SS. Andrew and Gregory, which Rome erected on the spot of the dwelling of the holy Pontiff, confirms the fact.

Saint Gregory, as we read of his life, was also instructed by God Himself, in the efficacy of these thirty Masses, and he recommended the practice on various occasions.

In the life of St. Vincent Ferrer, we read that he had thirty consecutive Masses celebrated for his deceased sister and saw her delivered from Purgatory.

Pope Benedict XIII lauded this pious practice of having thirty Masses said for each soul that has departed from this life.

In Italy, France, Spain, Germany, and especially England, which was converted by missionaries sent by St. Gregory, it was an established custom previous to the Reformation and the French Revolution, to have thirty consecutive Masses said for each departed soul. In a number of old churches in Europe, altars dedicated to St. Gregory and the Poor Souls are to be found. Many old paintings are still preserved, attesting the same fact.

Several religious orders have it specified in their rules and constitutions that thirty Gregorian Masses are to be said for every deceased member. The Carmelites, Dominicans, Nuns of the Visitation, and others follow this practice. A very old edition of the Dominican Missal contains special prayers for the Gregorian Masses.

These rules may be gathered from the following questions put to the Sacred Congregation of Indulgences regarding the celebration of Gregorian Masses and the answers given to them. (March 15, 1884; August 24, 1888; January 14, 1889. Also Benedict XIV, inst. 34, No. 22).

Q.  Is the confidence of the faithful in the thirty Masses called Gregorian, as speedily efficacious by the Divine Mercy, for the deliverance of a soul from Purgatory, pious, approved and reasonable?

A.  Yes.

Q.  Is it necessary that the Masses called Gregorian be celebrated in memory of Saint Gregory, without, however, making commemoration of the Saint?

A.  They need not be said in memory of St. Gregory.

Q.  Must the thirty Masses called Gregorian be said by the same priest?

A.  There is no obligation for them to be said by the same priest.

Q.  Must they be said for one soul alone, without any other intention?

A.  The Masses should be said exclusively for the soul whose deliverance from the pains of Purgatory is especially solicited from the Divine Mercy.

Q.  Should they be said on thirty consecutive days without interruption?

A.  Yes, for thirty days without interruption.

Q.  If the Gregorian Masses fall in the course of the Triduum does it constitute an interruption.?

A.  It does not, provided the celebration of the thirty Masses be resumed on Easter Sunday.

Q.  Must they be said on the same altar?

A.  No, they may be said on different altars.

Q.  Must they be said at a privileged altar?

A.  It is not necessary.

Q.  Must the Requiem Mass be said, at least when the Rubric permits it?

A.  Although it would seem proper, it is not an essential condition. The obligation is satisfied by saying the Mass of the day.

Q.  May the Gregorian Masses be offered for the living?

A.  No, they cannot be said for the living, but exclusively for departed souls.

You can contact them toll free (in the USA) at 1-877-737-9050. If you have a story to share about getting a sign from Above after having Masses said for a loved one who has passed away, please send to June at jklins1981@verizon.net.  I am in the midst of compiling these stories.  More on this in a future issue.

Saint Teresa of Avila said she knew of only three people who at death went straight to Heaven, one being a saintly Dominican priest, Fr. Ibanez.  St. John Bosco had a vision of his mother four years after her death, and when he asked her whether she went straight to Heaven she answered, “No.”  And Margaret Bosco was a very holy woman.

The Blue Cross, where Mirjana has her 2nd of the month apparitions

Clarification Concerning the 2nd of the Month Messages to Mirjana

Ana Shawl, who heads the IIPG, which is the internet part of Ivan’s prayer group, recently wrote concerning the messages to Mirjana on the 2nd of the month: “Mirjana's second of the month messages -  unlike the messages given on the 25th of each month, per Our Lady's instructions, through the visionary Marija, -  are not generally shared outside of the village, and are mainly for those who are there. Mirjana's messages are for the purpose of praying for unbelievers, and should be taken in that context.  Since Our Lady has not said that the 2nd of the month message is for the entire world, the parish of St. James does not officially post these 2nd of the month messages.

Message to Mirjana, October 2, 2009

Dear Children, As I look at you, my heart seizes with pain. Where are you going my children? Have you sunk so deeply into sin that you do not know how to stop yourselves? You justify yourselves with sin and live according to it. Kneel down beneath the Cross and look at my Son. He conquered sin and died so that you, my children, may live. Permit me to help you not to die but to live with my Son forever. Thank you!

Reflection on Mirjana’s October Message

By Fr. Neil Buchlein

Greetings! I hope that you have "caught your breath" by now after saying, "WOW! That is quite a message!" At the same time it could also "lull us" into a false complacency of how well we are doing. We may be on the other side of saying, “This is for non-believers, but that is not me!”  Let's take a look at what Mirjana means when she says that she prays for non-believers. Here is what she has said in the past: “Our Lady prays together with me for the non-believers, though She says: `For those who have not yet known God's love.’ For this intention, Mary asks for the help of us all, or those who look at Her as Mother, because She says we can change the non-believers through our prayer and example. In these difficult times, Mary desires that we pray especially for them, because all the ugly things that happen (wars, homicide, suicide, divorce, abortion, drugs) are caused by the non-believers. That is why She repeats: ‘When you pray for them, you are praying also for yourselves and for your future.' On my part, I urge you to take this seriously. If only you could see just once the tears that run down Our Lady's face when She speaks of the non-believers, I'm sure you'd pray with all your heart. Mary says that this is time for deciding, thus, we who say we believe in God have a great responsibility when we know that our prayers and sacrifices dry the tears from Our Lady's face."

I'm going to "stretch the envelope" a little, and ask those of us who are sleeping or reading these messages with closed minds and hearts, "When we are not living the messages, then who do you think we are?" "We are non-believers!" We are certainly not going to win over those who say they are non-believers when we are providing a poor example and not living faithfully. Are we really using the Five Stones [prayer, Eucharist, Confession, Bible reading, fasting] to our advantage?

Take a look once again at the message: "Dear Children, As I look at you, my heart seizes with pain.” She is hurting as any mother would for her children who are wondering off. Her heart is in pain because of Her unconditional, merciful love for us. She will, as our Heavenly Mother, NEVER give up on us, but She will soon stop reminding us monthly, when Her Son tells Her that She will no longer appear to the visionaries.

Humanity is addicted to sin, and we are on the fast track to destruction. How quick we are to defend ourselves even when we are doing wrong. What a horrible and no-good priest am I when I question a person who does not attend Sunday Mass on a weekly basis! Gee, I thought that I was called and ordained (a Sacrament in the Church) to be a shepherd and lead them from going astray.

We live so fast, and have so much at our "beck and call" that many look to try to "fit God into their lives," rather than having Him as the center. We can justify anything today, even without thinking long and hard about it. This attitude is extremely prevalent in the world today. Gee, do you really think we want to humble ourselves and "Kneel down beneath the Cross and look at my Son." This message is not about "doom and gloom" but certainly a "Wake Up Call" and tell us that we are NOT doing what we need to do. Don't say, "Oh, Fr. Neil, but I am trying." Don't try, but DO IT.

Time is running out very quickly, and one day soon we will no longer have these Messages of Love. Our Mother does not want us to lose the race, but live with Her Son forever. BUT will we be responsible, or come up with some ridiculous or "worldly justifiable excuse" that "everyone is doing it"?

This is not an easy life, and once you know of the Messages, there are many obstacles that are thrown in our way. It takes courage, perseverance, and love. Doing what we need to do may even cause us heartache, and to become unpopular. I know priests (and I am one of them. . .imagine that!) who have lost "friends" because they spoke the Truth, but the friend(s) did not want to hear it. So the priest licks his wounds, cries out to the Lord and the Blessed Mother, and hears the words, "Thank You for being a priest and teaching the Truth." The Truth may not make me popular, but it will get me into Heaven. Isn't that where you want to be?

The clock is in motion. Do an inventory of your soul. Get to the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and make the necessary changes that you need to make. Mother is waiting!

Cardinal Schönborn Highlights the Importance of Medjugorje

By Sister Emmanuel

On September 15th, St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, Austria, welcomed the visionary, Marija Pavlovic-Lunetti.  The Cathedral, packed with people, hosted a beautiful evening which included Holy Mass and Eucharistic Adoration.  It lasted from 4 PM to 9:30 PM!  At the end of the evening a very powerful and happy surprise came when Cardinal Schönborn gave the final benediction to the whole assembly.  Afterward, he highlighted the importance of Medjugorje for our times.  He told of the graces of liberation obtained in Medjugorje.  In particular he featured stories about addictions (drug, alcohol, etc) and the graces that come to those who participate in the life of the Church.

Here are a few words from the Cardinal: “We can give thanks to Our Lord because through His Mother, so many people are led to the Love of God, so many conversions happen, people go back to Confession and they develop a love for the Eucharist.  Reconciliations happen in families, and some people are cured from drug and other types of addictions.  The fact that the Mother of God wishes to be so close to all Her children is an immense gift.  She has already showed this proximity in many places and for many years in a special way in Medjugorje.”  (See www.kath.net, 9/16 and 9/18, 2009).

Such events speak for themselves!  They spare us fruitless wars against those who publish negativity on Medjugorje.  Let us recall here that Cardinal Schönborn is one of the main authors, with Pope John Paul II, of the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The Rosary Alone Can Work Miracles in the World and in Your Lives”

  By Dean Rose

On December 6, 2008, I went deer hunting with my dad. I’ve been hunting for over 30 years and have never shot a deer with more than three antlers on one side.  With regulations they have today on deer hunting in Erie County, you now need at least four antlers on either side.  With that in mind, I didn't feel very confident about bagging a big buck that year either.

I was in no hurry to rush into the woods and freeze while sitting on a stump, so I didn't get into the woods until a little bit after 9:00 AM.  Being that it was so peaceful, I decided to pray the Rosary, and continued to walk until I found a place to sit down.  After about 10 minutes of walking, I found a place and then finished the Rosary. As I said the last prayer of the Rosary, the Hail Holy Queen, I looked up and saw the biggest buck I have ever seen! Along with the buck was a doe. They were about 100 yards away and approaching.  The only problem was that the buck had his eyes locked up on me and I couldn't move or he would be gone.  So I had no choice but to play the game of freeze.  This game seemed to last forever, and after 10 to 15 minutes he finally looked away, and I was able to pull up and get my big buck - a 12 point.

I called my wife and told her, and she didn't believe me at first. I finally convinced her, and told her about how I just finished the Rosary when the buck came along.  I got off the phone with my wife, and my brother, who doesn't call often, called my house and my wife told my “Doubting Thomas” brother that I just knocked down a 12 point.  His first response was sarcastically, "What, did God send him a deer?"  to which my wife replied, “Well, he just finished the Rosary when along came this 12 point buck." My brother was stunned and said, “Oh.”

God's timing is always on time.

Editor’s note: Dean is from Erie, PA.  The title of the story is from a message Our Lady gave on January 25, 1991.

Special Request

Slavenka Jelavic, a popular guide in Medjugorje, is gathering the names of priests who have gotten their vocations through Medjugorje.    Slavenka wrote, “We need these facts because all of those who attack Medjugorje. Could you please contact all of those you know? This is not going anywhere special, but it is good to have these facts.”

When I first got this request I felt very driven to help. I contacted people I thought could help, including Mary Sue Eck from “Medjugorje Magazine.”  Mary Sue told me that they had just published a book of 15 testimonies of priests who got their calling through Medjugorje, called Will You Be My Priest? and that it would be released the following week!!!! Mary Sue said that when Our Lady first asked her to do the book, she said it was not a good time for her. But Our Lady kept at it, and being that the Pope declared this the “Year of the Priest,” she gave in. Mary Sue was surprised at the timing of my call for this request. Wow!  The visionaries say that there are no coincidences. This project  is truly Our Lady’s wish, and  I think that She really wants this NOW since it is the “Year of the Priest.” If you can help, please contact us for the priest questionnaire.  Email is preferred: jklins1981@verizon.net

Editor’s note: The profits from Will You Be My Priest?  will go to Mother’s Village and Fr. Jozo’s home for teenage girls.
