VOL. 19, NO 3    Published Monthly     March 5, 2006

Current Monthly Message of February 25, 2006

"Dear Children! In this Lenten time of grace, I call you to open your hearts to the gifts that God desires to give you. Do not be closed, but with prayer and renunciation say 'yes' to God and He will give to you in abundance. As in springtime the earth opens to the seed and yields a hundredfold, so also your
heavenly Father will give to you in abundance. I am with you and love you, little children, with a tender love. Thank you having responded to my call.

"Especially now, in this time of grace, open your hearts, little children, and express your love to the Crucified. Only in this way, will you discover peace, and prayer will begin to flow from your heart into the world." (3/25/04)

We thank Bernard Gallagher of Birmingham, England, for this picture of Jesus on the crucifix on Apparition Hill, as well as several other photos in this issue. Bernard’s awesome photo collection can be viewed at www.medjugorjegallery.blogspot.com

 Medjugorje

I have often thought that circumstances which combine to bring a person to Medjugorje are a call to the sacred.  Many times they are a call to a person immersed in the values of a secular world to put them aside and come to the sacred.

Actually, there are so many assaults on the existence or the providence of God and the respect that is due to human life that to some it seems that nothing is sacred.

Actually, we think of things and people as sacred insofar as they are related to God. When Jesus says that we are to be holy as our Heavenly Father is holy, it seems like an exaggeration. However, it goes along with His encouragement that we should pray always – and not cease.

To me, the great power of Medjugorje is that it is a center from which Mary wants to have a message spread to all the world.  But She also wants it to be a place of conversion where pilgrims are brought to a new level of insight and religious generosity.  They are brought to a change of heart which prepares them to carry a message – sometimes in the face of rejection, many times in awakening an interest in others that will lead them to a decision of world peace.

That involves a commitment to lay aside many of the invitations of the world to acquire more and be more, and in some way or other, to be superior, to be secure because of earthly possessions or accomplishments.

When Jesus says we need to renounce all that we have and even what we are, it sounds like another exaggeration.

When Mary calls us on a pilgrimage to Medjugorje, by God’s grace and Mary’s loving motherhood, it all makes sense.  The Sacred Heart of Christ and the Immaculate Heart of Mary radiate trust and peace.

A Pilgrim’s Dream for Medjugorje

By Teresa Smith

In September of  2003,  I traveled to Medjugorje with my friend Fiona. I was very blessed to receive many great graces whilst in Medjugorje. After our meeting I went to hear the visionary Marija speak at her home which is a rarity, as she hardly gets to speak to the pilgrims.  I asked her whether Our Lady wanted the sick to be in Medjugorje and to go up the mountain (Apparition Hill). I had been assisted up the hill the previous year - I am a thalidomide survivor - my impairment has resulted in my having short arms and short legs and a permanent wheel chair user.  Marija's reply was that a lady who had been in a wheelchair was cured and this happened at the Blue Cross.  She then said Our Lady said that She prays for the sick in a very different way and that it was not necessary to go up the mountain - you can be at the bottom and still pray and have the same experiences.
The next evening at the time of Ivan's apparition I experienced the following: First of all I looked up and saw two big blue crosses appear before my eyes and saw the clouds parting and a vapor trail appear and then I saw Our Lady with Her hands joined in prayer and Her head bowed, the shape of Her face, Her veil........and She turned in the cloud as if to say, “This is real, you are not imagining this.”  I was  greatly touched by  this experience and the
great grace that She revealed Herself to me.  The next day I went back to the mountain and whilst at prayer, together with my friend and her aunty we witnessed the Host and the Blood of Christ pulsating within the sun and the beautiful Divine Mercy colors surrounding the sun.  In addition I was the only one to witness a fetus.  This fetus was identical to that of a scan of a small baby, clearly definable was the  vertebrae - I was incredibly moved by this and to this day do not fully understand the full meaning of this, however I am sure all will be revealed soon.
Originally, my goal was  to see a chair  lift on the  mountain.  Our Lady subsequently made  this clear  that  this was  not necessary as  you can have the same experiences on  the  bottom of the  mountain.  I now  feel  I would like  to get a house  in Medjugorje for the sick, disabled (and non-disabled). I have already found the land which is suitable for this project.
Hopefully if my dream is realized, I hope that we can bring pilgrims to Medjugorje. I would welcome readers to
assist me in prayer for this intention.  I hope you can help

St Patrick's Intercession Leads Us to Discover Medjugorje

By  Peace Pilgrim

Two years ago, it never occurred to me to associate St. Patrick with Christ, much less Mother Mary, Medjugorje and the Church. How the Lord works in mysterious ways and how wonderfully He uses His saints to gather up His lost sheep. Here's how St. Patrick interceded and got the Medjugorje ball rolling for me:  I'd been laid low by a bad relapse of the virulent
Fujian flu that had already claimed thousands of lives.  After feeling like a walking corpse for weeks, I was finally beginning to feel better. Although neither Catholic nor Irish, I thought St. Paddy's Day was a good excuse to celebrate my regained health.  After weeks of not having an appetite, the prospect of green beer and a corned beef and cabbage dinner was pretty darn appealing.
But the LA traffic that day was notoriously bad and my husband was late getting home.  Not one to waste time, I killed that time by "googling" green beer.  What was up with that tradition?  My search led me to a St. Patrick's website and I read up on that fourth century saint who was born to British nobility, captured as a youth,  and enslaved by a cruel Druid chieftain to escape to become a priest and then eventually Bishop of Ireland, changing history forever.
Little did I know then that St. Paddy was to forever change our histories, my husband's and mine.  While on the subject of St. Patrick, I vaguely recalled there was another saint that helped people to sell their houses.  No, it wasn't St. Anthony. I just couldn't remember.  So, I “googled” the words “saint selling houses.”  Links to
St. Joseph websites instantly popped up.
Still no husband on the horizon, so I started perusing a web article on
St. Joseph.  There was a list of links at the bottom of the page and one in particular caught my eye.  Something about Mary visiting Earth in present time.  It sounded like it might be one of those cheesey tabloid articles.  But heck, I had the time. Clicking on it,  I learned that She was appearing in a faraway land called Bosnia, in a tiny village in the middle of nowhere with an impossibly long and unpronounceable name starting with "M," and had been doing so for almost 23 years.
I must say, I began reading the article with gigantic skepticism.  "I pray to Her Son... and how  is it that I don't  know this?"  Still no husband  and so I kept  reading.  The  more I read about  this  mysterious --- and miraculous --- place  called  Medjugorje,  the more  intrigued I became.
Just then my husband pulled into the driveway and we took off.  We celebrated my recovering health with hearty "Cheers!"  over a pitcher of green beer and I gave no mind to what I had just learned about St. Joseph and  Mother Mary until two days later on St. Joseph's Day.

Via inner promptings, Our Lady soon invited me to go on a pilgrimage. "Come, come quickly. You are my 11th hour convert." A few days later, my husband was extended an invitation as well. Our calls were so clear and powerful, we went at the first opportunity. On a mountain in a distant land called Medjugorje, we were converted. Within a year, in 2005, we received the Sacraments of  Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist, and were sacramentally married in the Catholic Church, perhaps the least likeliest of the churches we would have considered joining.
This month we will once again celebrate St. Patrick's Day, but this time with hearts filled with gratitude. For it was St. Paddy who pointed me in the direction of  St. Joseph, who in turn went out of his way that weekend to lead me to Medjugorje and his earthly spouse, Mother Mary, who in turn did  the job She was predestined for: leading Her children, especially the wayward sheep, to Her Son.

Being Polite While Fasting

By Ellen Marashio

I was finally having a good fast day Friday...only bread & water.  It was already 5:00 P.M. so I knew I would make it.  Then my son's fiancee, Carla, asked me to try this great chocolate because she knows I love it as much as she does.  To be polite, and because I didn't want to explain, and because I love her to pieces, and didn't want her to feel bad, I accepted.

Later, I thought of a great idea when we're put in this position.  As most of us, I give my fasts to the Blessed Mother to use however She wants, and ask Her if She would be kind enough to take care of my intentions. Carla's mom has cancer.  What I should have done is explain to Carla, or anyone else who offers us "treats" on fast days, about this trade with the Blessed Mother and the power of prayer and fasting. Then, offer to add their intentions.  This way, the person won't be offended and will be glad to let us continue with the fast.

To Consecrate Oneself To The Cross

A talk given by Fr. Tomislav Vlasic on 9/16/85

I can tell you of many experiences.

First of all, as far as the messages of Our Lady are concerned, it is quite clear that the events of Medjugorje are facts. Our Lady has appeared, the Woman clad in the sun, fighting against satan.

From the beginning of July to the end of August almost all messages have been a warning of satan's presence and we, here in Medjugorje, have experienced just this. It is not a question of items of news from a newspaper, but a question of real happenings, after which we were able to experience satan's attacks, his real presence. For Her part, Our Lady teaches us to face this problem, how to fight it and She always points out to us the weapons - prayer, penance, inner spiritual life - by which we are able to face the problem of satan's presence. We have, in fact, lived through one of satan's revelations, not so much in the sense of a new revelation, but in the sense that, through these messages, Our Lady has made us rediscover satan's presence.

And we have opened our eyes and seen him and learned something very, very important, in my opinion, for the whole Church, since through these warnings of Our Lady we have discovered satan's presence, really hidden in civilization which has denied satan's presence, just as it has denied God's presence.

The other  experiences are  more  those  of spiritual dynamics.   Whenever I can, I work in
Medjugorje mainly with those groups formed by Our Lady - the prayer groups. I cannot talk
now about the messages given to the prayer groups, but what I can say is that a profound
plan on the part of Our Lady and of  God is involved whereby people grow in a very healthy way and the fruits of this spiritual path are there  already  to be  seen;  at the same time a vital revelation has become clear to us. For instance, during all this period of time we have been experiencing what happens to people who have practiced yoga when they enter the Medjugorje area. They all suffer from some sort of breakdown, that is, they all feel some considerable distress. By following, for instance, those who practice yoga, I have personally discovered many limitations.

We have discovered what Jesus Christ means in the face of yoga. We have also discovered why these people, as they enter the area where a strong grace is present, experience inner distress.

First of all, we have discovered that yoga is a human technique; it is a human kind of wisdom and brings people up to a certain limit, where people stop and stay, without going any further.

Another problem we have discovered is this - people following the yoga techniques open themselves and become totally open, the total opening being such as to allow beings to enter. There is even the possibility that evil beings may enter, but it is usually the case of the guru, the master, the one who directs the person.

The limitation of yoga is the human limit, whereby, with the aid of a technique my body can be made to reach silence, but it will not go any further.

As St. John has pointed to Jesus Christ, similarly, yoga's point of arrival can only be that human limit, after which the open person ought to make room for Jesus Christ and for Jesus Christ alone. These ailments come because these people have not actually met the living God who leads us to total enlightenment and salvation.

What we have recently experienced is mainly this - on the one hand we have discovered that those who live a spiritual technique strive to get some sort of concentration, silence, to attain a calm attitude. On the other hand, in these days, it has also become clear to us that we are given certain disturbances, temptations, because - as we have found out through the visionaries - God allows these very disturbances, these very temptations, in order to bring us to total purification.

So there you have a spiritual path, the one of yoga, following human foot-prints and reaching the human limit, whereas we, in our opening up to faith, go beyond human limits.

It is God who allows even misfortunes, who allows even trials, through which we are able to go beyond.

This I have learned: yoga gives us silence. Christ gives us peace. Peace which goes beyond silence. This confirms what Our Lady told us through Jelena in 1983 - that She indeed has come to purify all the world movements and to lead us to Jesus Christ. This is one of our experiences. As far as Medjugorje is concerned, I see this as being of paramount importance, namely, that those priests who have lived this experience of Medjugorje themselves may help those who have been in the East looking for salvation, and bring them to Jesus Christ, without denying certain values of yoga, of oriental human wisdom, but setting out as priests with these people, just like Jesus Christ used to do with the Apostles, in order to bring them to total enlightenment.

How sad I am! Indeed I am sad, we are too few here in Medjugorje to help people coming from every part of the world in search of God. Many are those who write to me on the very issue of the spiritual level of yoga asking for help, asking to be guided, and I cannot do anything, since I am so committed in the parish ...

In this spiritual field alone, experts are needed who live interiorly these messages of Our Lady in order to enlighten those who, somehow, have got lost, who have lost their way, who have not fully found God. This is connected with something else ; some people have been to India searching for yoga, whilst the whole of the West lives yoga - the Oriental live according to techniques, whereas the Western Christians live the yoga of pleasure: they smoke, drink, eat, enjoy themselves, they want a pleasant Christianity. People in the East look directly for a spiritual path, whereas in the West, those who believe in Christ say they believe in Jesus Christ, but at the same time, look for Christ in pleasure. I have discovered the medieval asceticism - indeed these days I have understood that I can deepen my relationship with God in prayer, only to the degree in which I mortify myself, just as Jesus explained to us yesterday, in the Gospel. He openly started telling the Apostles what one has to bear in mind, "He who is prepared to lose his life will gain it."

The meaning of penance, the meaning of fasting is just this. Particularly during the last few months, Our Lady and also Jesus have been asking through Jelena - particularly some group members - to consecrate themselves to the Cross. Our Lady's last message is also indeed a call to the consecration to the Cross, the kind of consecration whereby Jesus wishes there were people willing to consecrate everything, ready to really offer everything to God.

In my opinion we shall reach once more a spiritual depth along this path. Why have many monasteries remained empty? As I see it, they have, because they have lost mystical prayer and in turn, mystical prayer has been lost because we have lost the meaning of fasting and deep prayer.

Now, with these experiences, we are making our way towards a spiritual, mystical life from which many a vocation will stem… I know we are strong when we are close to God and that we can solve problems to the degree in which we are close to God, but as so many Christians are far from prayer, they are also far from God.  We have learned to live, to have our own lives in God, to feel that when we are closer to God, we are really closer to life, we are more complete. But since we are not quite so close to God through prayer, we are not even able to choose God's means, to choose God's weapons against evil.

Let us start praying, let us learn prayer and we shall, day by day, discover within ourselves a greater strength, a brighter light. Every day we shall have more life.  If we manage to discover exactly what Our Lady teaches us and if that becomes tangible for us, a true experience, then we will also be able to bring salvation to the whole world.  It is useless to bring Our Lady's messages to the world as we would bring the messages of newspapers or books, because Bibles and the most beautiful written works are to be found everywhere, but these are lifeless without us. Without a deep and serious commitment through conversion, Our Lady's word has no meaning.

I would like to invite everyone to live this deep reality, through daily prayer, through conversion.

Editor’s note: We thank and acknowledge the Friends of Medjugorje Assoc. in Milano, Italy, who transcribed homilies by Fr. Tomislav Vlasic and Fr. Slavko Barbaric during the period 1984-1987. They put them into a 4-volume collection, and made them available to the public free of charge, asking only that we remember to pray for the most distant souls.

Vicka’s Insights on Lent

In order to help us live this Lent in a better way and focus on what is essential, Vicka shared these insights:

"The Gospa is pleased when She sees us live Lent with the heart and not in a forced manner. We can decide what sacrifices to offer according to what is in our hearts, and then offer them with joy. It is important to pray more, especially in front of the Cross. It is good to pray the Sorrowful Mysteries in front of the Cross every day, kneeling (if health permits), looking at the Cross. Then we'll feel how much Jesus suffered for us. All of us can pray the Rosary! If it is still difficult for us, let us ask for the grace to do so and put all our good will into it.

"The best sacrifice is to live a change inside ourselves, to change our lives by looking at Jesus. Ask Him, 'Jesus, how can I help you? How can I walk with you?'

"Less words and more goodwill to change!

"During Lent we are preparing ourselves to be filled with the joy and the light of Easter. Today I am building myself in my interior by walking with Jesus, and then on Easter Sunday, Jesus will rise again in my heart!" Vicka said!

 Walking down from Calvary

By David J Sheehan

Last June, I went to Medjugorje in the company of St. David’s Relief volunteers. We had spent the previous week working on Badija Island as part of our summer workcamp and now were spending some R & R in Medjugorje before heading back to the States.

On Saturday, June 11th, a group of us climbed Mount Krizevac (Cross Mountain) with the Gray Friars of the Bronx leading the way.  After reaching the top, I stayed a short time and then the itch came over me to get down from the mountain. I really don’t know why, but it is always that way for me on Mt Krizevac - a little rest at the top and then I must get busy again.

I reached the bottom of the mountain and split from my companions. I wanted some time to be alone. I began walking to the east along “Mt. Krizevac Road.”  The little shops around the entrance to the Way of the Cross give way to a strange bleakness, unlike anywhere else in Medjugorje.  Cars and tour buses speed by me on the narrow road. If they run me over, I would be happy to die here, but that is not in the cards. God has other plans.

I am soon past the turnoff that takes you back into the heart of the village, St. James Church. I would prefer to go back to town and have a nice cheese pizza and a Coke. Maybe I would see some friends there and hear some funny stories. This is not in the cards either, and I must continue to walk eastward.  I start to notice how lifeless and dead the mountain looks and my thoughts turn to Calvary.

Mt. Krizevac is Calvary in Medjugorje. Unlike Apparition Hill, where Our Lady seems to greet you at every nook and corner, Mt. Krizevac is hard and unforgiving. It is well that it is so, for it reminds us of our sins and trespasses, the many times we failed Our Lord and have been uncharitable. We remember the price for our sins. They cost Our Lord everything, even His Mother. Yes, even as Our Lord was dying, He lost His Mother. He gave Her to us. He never held anything back from us. I wish I could claim the same, but it would not be true. Calvary was unforgiving to Our Lord. He stumbled and fell, each stone of Calvary taking delight in being a trap for the Son of God. Finally, He hangs there, dead on a cross. Calvary has its trophy.

We all hurry away from Calvary. It is an unpleasant place. There is nothing there but death. I would rather be in town enjoying myself, but I must continue walking eastward, hoping the road will soon turn toward Cenacolo and life again. There is Resurrection there; I have seen the mural in the Chapel, but first I must continue walking along this Calvary road. There is a sign at a small house, welcoming visitors with a “Rakija” sign, but there are no takers. I see no one, just an empty patio. There is no joy here, just a somber emptiness.

Was it that way on Calvary after Our Lord died? Did all those who screamed for His blood just walk away when they got what they wanted?  Was that how Calvary ended with Our Lady, John and a few others, keeping the body of Jesus company until He could be taken down from the cross? Was there nothing there but the silence of the grave?

I am walking quickly now as I can see the end in sight. On my right, there is a large building with a picture of Padre Pio on it.  After all the dreariness of this road, it is the first ray of hope.

The road finally turns and brings me to new construction near Cenacolo. My inquisitiveness of a child takes over and I inspect a building in progress. I put thoughts of Calvary out of my head. This has been a most depressing walk. I pass through Cenacolo and come to the Chapel. On the wall, there is the mural. Our Lord has conquered death. He has conquered Calvary and He is pulling Adam and Eve out of Eternal Death with His strong arms, the same arms that were pinioned on the cross, just a few short minutes ago.

We must learn to face Calvary. We do not want to do so. It is painful to us. We would rather do something more pleasant, but we must face Calvary.  Its dreariness is caused by our unrepentant nature. The specter of death on Calvary is what our sins have done to our souls and those sins were enough to kill the Son of God.
We must  confront Calvary and not run from it, for in its bleak and barren reflection  is all that  we have that is  displeasing to God. If  we accept this and  surrender to the  Most High God,  then we, like Adam and Eve can be saved. At  the  hour of our  death,  Jesus will  reach down and grab us with His nail-scarred hands and tell the world, “This one belongs to Me!” Calvary will be no more.

Editor’s note:  Dave is from Crowley, TX.  St. David’s Relief will once again be heading to Bosnia, June 3-17. The 2006 Work Camp will be a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the events surrounding Medjugorje.  For information you can see their website at www.stdavids.org.

 Grandpa’s Holy Card

By June Klins

Last month my friend Ginny Spaeder called and told me that she wanted to share something with me that seemed very strange.  She said that a few days before, she was visiting someone in the hospital and while she was sitting in the lobby, her sister-in-law told her that she wanted to show her something. On the window sill there was a prayer book titled “Mary, My Hope,” and inside it was an old holy card from a funeral home.  On the front was a picture of Our Lady and on the back was the name “Lawrence J. Spaeder.”   The date of his death was February 15, 1965. The reason Ginny and her sister-in-law were intrigued by this was that Lawrence was an uncle to both of their husbands. And the reason Ginny called me was because Lawrence was my grandfather. Ginny told me that I should go to the hospital and check it out.

I soon remembered that I did have a prayer book by the same name which I had gotten on my first pilgrimage to Medjugorje.  Just a few months prior I had searched my house for it and could not find it anywhere. I also had some holy cards from my grandfather’s funeral and it would not have been unusual for me to use the holy card as a bookmark in the prayer book.  So I thought perhaps this was my prayer book that had fallen out of my bag on a visit to the hospital sometime. I went after work the next day to check it out.  As soon as I saw the prayer book I knew it was not mine. My book had a blue cover and this one was very old looking with a black cover.  I opened the prayer book and found  the holy card. I looked  at  the  back of  it, and sure enough,  it was from  my grandfather’s funeral.  There  was a prayer  at the bottom which read,  “O  gentlest  Heart  of  Jesus,  ever  present in the Blessed Sacrament, ever consumed with burning love for the poor captive souls in Purgatory, have mercy on the soul of Thy departed servant.  Be not severe in Thy judgment, but let some drops of Thy Precious Blood fall upon the devouring flames and do Thou, O merciful Savior, send Thy angels to conduct Thy departed servant to a place of refreshment, light and peace. Amen.  May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. “ (I thought to myself that holy cards these days never mention Purgatory.)

As I began to wonder what this was all about, I remembered that several months before I had sent in to the missions to have Gregorian Masses said for all of my grandparents, even though they had been dead for many years. I had felt hounded by the thought to do this, even though it was very expensive for me to do on my shoe-string budget. Our Lady of Medjugorje said, “There are a large number of souls who have been in Purgatory for a long time.” (7/21/82) This thought would not leave me alone until I finally submitted to having the Masses said.

After another friend shared with me the story of the sign from Heaven she had gotten on Christmas Day, after having had Gregorian Masses said for her husband, I told God that if He wanted to send me a sign about my grandparents, He could. I asked that the signs be one at a time, in the order that they passed away.  My father’s father, Lawrence, was the first one to die. I did not ask for a particular sign.

After I left the hospital it all came together- Grandpa’s holy card was my sign!  What were the odds of someone I know  finding that holy card – and then telling me about it?  I still wanted confirmation though to be sure it was not just a strange coincidence. I asked God to give me a confirmation that this was indeed my sign that Grandpa had been released from Purgatory. When I got home I found the exact same holy card in my drawer among a collection of holy cards I had saved from my grandfather’s funeral, 41 years ago that very month. That is not that unusual, but …. in the mail that day I received a book called, 30 Days for the Holy Souls

The Gregorian Masses are 30 Masses said for 30 consecutive days for the release of a soul in Purgatory. Is this awesome or what?

Editor’s note:  The book 30 Days for the Holy Souls, which has an Imprimatur, was written by a nun a hundred years ago. There is a story in there about a Dominican who asked before his death that a Mass be said for him as soon as he died. The Mass was said promptly within an hour of his death. After Mass the soul appeared to the priest who had the Mass and complained that he had left him in Purgatory for 30 years, but it had only been ONE HOUR !!! There is another story about a very devout saint, St. Severinus, who went to Purgatory for a time just for saying his prayers too hastily! What a great sacrifice to make this Lent – to have Gregorian Masses said for someone who has died. The 3 marks of Lent are prayer, fasting and almsgiving, and having Gregorian Masses said for the Holy Souls fulfills all three of those. My favorite organization to send to for the Masses is the Seraphic Mass Association. You can contact them toll free at 1-877-737-9050.
